Deciding On Transportation Senior Services
from: Its About SeniorsSeniors can lose their driving privileges quite suddenly impacting the degree of independence and self-esteem they took for granted as their right as citizens. Sometimes chronic illnesses like arthritis or Alzheimer can interfere with proper motor skills and judgment. Other times, eyesight weakens to a level where it may be dangerous to be on the road but not enough to keep someone housebound. They can still enjoy a fruitful social life if they take care of their transportation senior services need.
In addition, many of the elderly continue to need to be transported to doctor's appointments and caregivers to maintain their health. Or, if they are incapable of preparing their own meals, they may need transportation to a meals program. In cases where an elderly person has fallen suddenly ill or is incapacitated, transportation in such situations needs to be planned on prior to the emergency.
Seniors need to have a wide support network for their transportation senior services need, which should include:
* Family
* Friends and Neighbors
* Local Agencies
* Home Care Services
* Emergency Personnel
Family
Many families who have an elderly person in their fold, who needs transportation senior services, will rotate schedules of appointments between siblings. This works well if there are multiple siblings with flexible schedules available to make sure a senior makes their appointments or can be taken on recreational outings occasionally, however, most of the time this is not the case in today's working families. In such situations, one might turn to neighbors to help with some of the transportation needs.
Friends and Neighbors
Many seniors can rely on friends and neighbors to help them get to medical appointments, but some do not want to be a burden when they simply want to go on an outing about town. Fortunately, there are a variety of ways to get around town even if you won't drive a car anymore.
Local Agencies
Local bus routes offer seniors the chance to get about town to some of the business areas for recreational purposes. Other seniors find that they want to take classes and workshops and the buses offer a convenient way to get there without bothering family or friends. Buses are typically inexpensive but are subject to weather conditions and scheduled stops.
Subway stations are available in major cities and can be very helpful for providing quick and inexpensive transportation services to seniors who want to get about town. Unfortunately, not all cities have subway or elevated systems available to their population.
Home Care Services
Some home care services provide door-to-door transportation senior services for a fee. Some have scheduled routes, pick-up and drop-off spots and times. Others can be called on demand. Services vary widely and can be found by doing a search on the Internet or looking in the phone book.
Emergency Transportation Senior Services
For emergencies, obviously one should always be willing to call for an ambulance, a taxi, or any other of the city services to help transport an elderly person in crisis. Insurance information and programs should be carefully researched to find out which option is available during what scenarios so that the proper actions are taken in times of emergency.
